Thanks. Yes, when I moved here I was disappointed that there were no nature reserves close by, and was amazed that there are actually loads I didn't know about.
I am so grateful to the societies who safeguard these special places :-)
Thank you! I have added a lot of these to my 'to visit' list. I'm hoping to spot a kingfisher for the first time this year - so Tophill Low is top of the list!
Thank you. I have also seen them at Blacktoft Sands, which I think is not too far from you, and frequently from 'Charlie's Hide' at Fairburn Ings (which might be a bit far). Good luck - they are stunning :-)
This is such a fabulous overview of the wetlands, and the photography is lovely. Quite the work, putting all of this together in such an accessible format. I will revisit when I go south again to visit one day. Thank you
Thank you so much for your kind words. I really do appreciate it.
I am also very fond of your part of the world, and had a great time exploring some of the Argyll Forest Park last year. Didn't make it too far on to the Kintyre Peninsula though - just to Tarbert :-)
Quite splendid - I grew up in Leeds and haven't lived there in 50 years. Back then "we" would head to The Dales for wildlifing ... certainly missed out on all these marvelous wetlands, assuming they even existed as visitable places back then. Thanks.
Thank you very much for your kind words. I also lived near York for quite a few years before I realised these places existed (though some are relatively new).
I love your post. Wetlands are magical places. I’m fortunate to live very close to a small one where the Birdlife is prolific for its size. Currently there are hundreds of flamingoes, regular visitors.
Having grown up in the Netherlands, I’ve always had a love for wetlands, just like you. Potteric Carr looks like a really beautiful place to visit, definitely my favorite from the ones in this post. I added it to my list if I ever make it to the UK again. Thank you!
It’s a fantastic place for birding, I miss living there. Although, here in Florida there are many many wetlands and birds too, so I feel very fortunate!
Wow what a great selection of places you have access to!
As I went to our local nature reserve the other day I thought about how lucky that they exist. A safe haven for the birds.
Great photos 🙂

Well, that’s me sorted for the weekend!
Lol - thanks for reading!

Thanks for the very informative post and the beautiful wetlands photos.
Thank you :-)
Thanks for sharing this, Angie! How beautiful are these places…
Thank you :-)
Thanks for this Angie. Apart from Potteric which I visited last year I have only visited Fairburn, Tophill and Blacktoft all 3 about 30 years ago.
Thanks - it would be quite a way for you to come, and I imagine you have lots of equally great places to visit nearer to you :-)
Certainly no shortage Angie

Thank you very much - yes I think wetlands always attract lots of wildlife and are wonderful places to visit :-)

Thank you so much. We would love go birdwatching in the Netherlands and have been checking out suitable locations - perhaps later this year :-)
