A wonderful flower garden near York, England
The wonderfully named Breezy Knees is a lovely flower garden near York that Matt and I have been visiting for many years. In fact for the last six years or so we obtained season tickets on the day the gardens opened to the public each year so we could visit as often as we liked.
Strolling around with my camera, watching the plants change and bloom throughout the season, and finding a secluded bench for a coffee and a snack, has been a favourite way to spend many a summer morning. It is one of the places I will miss most as we leave Yorkshire.
A favourite bench for the morning coffee was one that overlooks the lovely main lake.
Breezy Knees extends to around 20 acres, but the winding paths and many separate areas within the gardens make it feel larger. These separate areas include the Lake, the Wildflower Meadows, the Lawned Garden, the Daylily and Peony Garden, the Raised Beds, the Cottage Garden, the Rose Garden, the Rock Garden and many more.
Being lovers of trees, Matt and I particularly love the Conifer Garden, where you can really appreciate the details of these wonderful trees. We have sometimes seen tiny goldcrests here as well as many other woodland birds.
The gardens have some amusing and quirky features, like Stone Hedge and Duke the Guard Dog.
And speaking of wellingtons, the gardens have a well known giant pair, shown below with Matt for scale.
The gardens open to the public on the 1st of May each year, and close on the 30th September. A feature of visits early in the season is the beautiful tree blossom.
Later in the season the flower meadows are at their best, bringing swathes of colour to the gardens.
June and July are the best months to see the Daylily and Peony Garden, which unsurprisingly has a great collection of these beautiful flowers. Just a few examples are shown below:
In August and September the flower beds are at their most colourful. Phlox and asters put on particularly impressive shows, with many varieties being displayed.
These are just a few examples of the many wonderful flowers on display here. Others include Achilleas, Alstroemerias, Coneflowers, Crocosmia, Dahlias, Persicaria, Roses, Sneezeweed and many, many more.
Of course, with so many flowers the gardens are great for spotting butterflies, bees and many other invertebrates.
As we move to pastures new, I am looking forward to discovering and exploring new gardens, parks and wild spaces.
But I doubt we will find anywhere to surpass the beauty, variety and character of Breezy Knees.

Another great report Angie. It’s a place I’ve heard of (our neighbour sometimes takes her grandchildren there) but have never visited. Your excellent photos have convinced me to add it to the list.
Wow so beautiful!!
