Ever Changing Views - The Joy of Living Near An Estuary
There is never the same outlook twice
I can’t believe how lucky we have been, finding a house to rent in such a fantastic location. And it was the cheapest one we looked at! Presumably because it is a long way from places to work, schools and even shops. Which suits us perfectly!
I’ve quickly come to realize why I love estuaries so much. With vast areas of sand and mudflats being uncovered every time the tide goes out, the view is constantly changing. Far more so than at most coastal locations. Add to that changes in the weather, times of high and low tide, height of the sun, shifting sands and the comings and goings of the abundant shorebirds, and the view is never the same twice. How could you ever get bored?
The photos here are all taken from upstairs windows in our house. Lapwings, curlews, oystercatchers, little egrets, herons and various gulls are always present on the shore at low tide. Large flocks of geese in typical ‘V’ formations sometimes fly over, and there is a large rookery just across a field.
When Matt suggested renting a house while we look for one to purchase, I wasn’t too keen on the idea. I thought it would be a hassle, essentially having to move twice. But I could see the sense in having the sale of our old house completed, so we would be ready to move quickly when we found one we want to buy.
I thought I would ‘put up’ with a rented house for a short time while we searched. Now I am thinking that it is like being on an extended holiday - I will be sorry to leave!
The joy of being close to the sea is the never ending change, the quality of light, the soundscapes. Though I am obsessed with tide times nowadays, something I didn’t think I would say!
